 A district of possiblities

A district of possiblities

Dear GSSD Stakeholders and Germantown Community,

The board of directors for the Germantown Special Services District (GSSD) is pleased to announce the hiring of Mr. Jamar Kelly as the new Interim Executive Director for the organization. We are excited to bring on someone with his breadth of experience in both the private and public sectors, including and most recently holding a position with the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) with the State of Pennsylvania. In the position that he is leaving with the DCED, he was responsible for working with local governments and municipalities to improve their capacities in financial administration, public safety and public works, community planning, municipal management, and code enforcement as they relate to economic development.

Mr. Kelly is a Germantown native who attended public schools in the neighborhood before obtaining a Bachelors’ Degree in Political Science from West Chester University, and a Master’s Degree in Administration, specializing in Nonprofit Management from Trinity University in Washington DC.

Jamar brings with him connections in the private sector from positions in Washington DC, and from the public sector which includes managing the daily operations of a facility for behaviorally challenged youth and working as a Legislative Aid for a PA House Representative.

Jamar also brings with him experience in fundraising, media and marketing, event planning and management, and most importantly relationship building with constituents across all levels.

The GSSD would like to take a moment to thank former Executive Director David Rose for the time he spent with the organization and his work in the community in helping to establish community partnerships and with the business district. We wish him the best with his future endeavors.

We look forward to the leadership of Jamar Kelly as he serves as Interim Executive Director of the GSSD, with his vision and experience and hope you will all join us in welcoming him to the organization on October 15, 2018.

Regards,

Ingrid R. Shepard

An apology from the GSSD

In the past week and a half there has been a significant accumulation of trash across the special services district in Germantown. The GSSD dropped the ball with communicating with our vendor, Ready, Willing & Able (RWA) to ensure they were paid in a timely manner.

As of this morning (August 1,2018), we can share that RWA has returned to clean the special services district and to remedy the overflowing trash situation.

At our Clean, Safe and Beautification meeting this morning we spoke about the continued engagement of merchants, property owners, city agencies and residents in the process of building a sustainable trash mitigation strategy by our organization. There is a lot of work to be done and it requires resident and merchant community support. In the future, please email our executive director, David Rose, at drose@germantownssd.com with your concerns about issues of litter in the commercial corridors. Together we can work to maintain a culture of cleanliness and accountability. It is important to note that this process is an ongoing continuous effort and priority with our organization and working with the community to make Germantown litter free for everyone. Thank you!

Yours in partnership,

David Rose, Executive Director

What is One Germantown?

Well, it's a way of thinking, it's a plan for the future, it's what's happening now in Germantown. The GSSD is a unique organization in Germantown, as we are not a non-profit working to solve a social problem, we are not a for profit business and we are not beholden to anyone but the stakeholders of Germantown - which is made up of commercial property and business owners, schools, places of worship, community organizations and the people who live here.

The primary mission of the Germantown Special Services District (GSSD) is to create an environment where business can thrive in the community. This means we work with developers on understanding the needs and wants of the community, we work with commercial property owners to attract tenants, we work with business owners to ensure that we are doing our part to provide them with a clean and safe community, business education services and assistance, marketing the district and the businesses within and we create and support events and programming that brings people into the district.

Most of the work that the GSSD does is done in collaboration and partnership with others because there are so many unique voices in the neighborhood, and working with them is a natural way for us to support the business district and surrounding community and to ensure that we are doing the most good and making an impact where it needs to be made.

A large focus of our organization is centered around marketing the district, which means we also love to market and showcase the fabulous community that is Germantown. Germantown is a one of a kind neighborhood, made up of the 19144 and 19138 zip codes - yes, we include East Germantown because - we are One Germantown.

As an organization, we don't always make the loudest noise or do the splashiest things, but that's because we're busy doing the things that create a strong foundation for the business district which helps to create a strong community around it.

In our efforts to showcase this wonderful neighborhood that so many of us call home or where we work and play, we created a place where our stakeholders can shine a light on the things that are important to them. We want and need your voices and your stories that highlight and showcase the community (the people, places and things that make Germantown) to help us in this work  - so send us your stories, posts, pictures and other musings and we'll share them with the world, through the One Germantown blog (OG Blog). Let's get the world talking about and seeing the Germantown that we all know and love - because we are One Germantown.

Thoughtfully,

Ingrid R. Shepard, Board Chair/President of the GSSD Board of Directors
